About the Artist

H.R. Das is a Mumbai based painter and sculptor celebrated for his bulls and horses. Working in charcoal and acrylic on canvas, he captures the raw power, pride and spirit of animals that are central to rural Indian life, elevating them to heroic, almost human presences that evoke empathy, joy and awe. Against backgrounds that become stages of intricate pattern, his young bulls carry both innocence and authority, and his horses move with a freedom that celebrates energy itself. His small scale sculptures carry the same grandeur, along with symbolic figures of Krishna as Makhan Chor.

Born in 1972 in Itla, Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal, Das completed a B.Sc. at the University of Burdwan before training in fine art, taking a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh, and a Master of Fine Arts at K.S.O. University, Mysore.

He has held solo exhibitions at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, including The Majestic Symphony in 2023, Paradise Lost in 2019 and Nandi in 2012, as well as The Magnificent Bull at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, Love n Affection at ICA Gallery, Jaipur, and shows at Nehru Centre Art Gallery and Bajaj Art Gallery in Mumbai. His work has been shown at the India Art Festival, Asia House in London, the Dhaka Art Center, ArtZest Dubai and galleries across India. His awards include the Painting Award from the Prafulla Dahanukar Art Foundation, the AIFACS Painting Award and awards from the Art Society of India and the Bombay Art Society. His work is held by the Governor House, Chhattisgarh, AIFACS, New Delhi, and private collectors in the UAE, USA and UK.
