Pradeep Chandra is an Indian photographer whose career has been shaped by photojournalism, portraiture, and a sustained interest in documenting people, places, and cultural histories. Over several decades, he has worked with major Indian publications including the Free Press Journal, The Indian Express, and the Times of India group, with contributions to publications such as The Illustrated Weekly of India, Bombay Times, and The Sunday Observer.
Portraiture occupies an important place within Pradeep's practice. His work includes photographs of artists, film personalities, political figures, and other public figures, approached through an observational style rather than elaborate technical intervention. He cites Henri Cartier-Bresson and Yousuf Karsh among his influences, alongside his elder brother Shiva Chandra.
Pradeep has exhibited photographic bodies of work addressing subjects ranging from the Kashmiri Pandit community and regions of India to Britain. His exhibition history includes The Alien Insiders – Story of Kashmiri Pandits, Britain 50 Years of Independence, Shekhawati – Pictures on Canvas, and photographic tributes to Amitabh Bachchan. More recent presentations include Bombay Through the Eyes of Pradeep Chandra in Gurugram and Mumbai and Lens & Legacy: Bollywood in Focus at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai.
His practice combines documentary observation with portraiture, creating a visual record of people, places, and cultural histories across several decades.
