Pubarun Basu is an Indian documentary photographer, filmmaker, and visual researcher whose interdisciplinary practice examines the intersections of environmental conservation, heritage preservation, and community-led activism. His work combines visual ethnography, archival research, and participatory storytelling to investigate changing landscapes, riverine ecosystems, cultural memory, and communities experiencing environmental displacement.

Pubarun's practice developed from an early engagement with visual storytelling under his father's guidance. He studied English Literature at the University of Calcutta before completing the Young India Fellowship's Post Graduate Diploma in Liberal Arts at Ashoka University. His long-term projects have focused particularly on the Ganga river system, indigenous communities, and the relationship between ecological change and cultural identity.

His work has been presented internationally, including at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and through the global exhibition tour of the Sony World Photography Awards. His project No Escape from Reality received the Sony World Photography Awards Youth Photographer of the Year title in 2021. His subsequent exhibitions and research presentations include A Walk by the River – Memoirs from the Ghats of Kolkata, the River Festival Fine Art Print Exhibition & Auction, and programming associated with IGNCA and UNESCO.

Pubarun was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list in the Arts category in 2022. He has also received a National Geographic Society and The Nature Conservancy Seed Grant, a CCRT Scholarship for Young Artists from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and the UNESCO Art for Earth Climate Creativity Lab Fellowship. His practice positions photography as both a record of environmental change and a means of amplifying community histories.
