I am Santosh Budyale, a rural contemporary artist from Raybag, Karnataka working in Acrylic on Canvas. My practice documents the soul of village life where the sacred and everyday coexist.
Women are the heart of my canvas - carrying harvest, performing Devi Puja, gathering at fairs, or tending goats and cattle. I portray them with dark earthy skin adorned with yellow kumkum and vibrant Ilkal sarees, set against an intense vermillion red that signifies Shakti, festivity and life-force.
My visual language is semi-cubist figurative with bold lines and flat colour planes. Animals, markets, bells and ritual objects are not background - they are companions in the story. My works like 'Village Fair' 'Village Market' 'Devadasi' 'Goat Market Place' and 'Folk Music' are attempts to archive rural rituals and community life that are rapidly changing.
My artistic journey began in Raybag, Belagavi district, observing village fairs, shepherd migrations and Devi worship. What began as sketches became a dedicated practice in 36x36 and 36x48 inch Acrylic on Canvas.
From 2024 to 2025, five major works - Village Fair, Village Market, Devadasi, Goat Market Place, Folk Music - were SOLD to collectors, affirming the resonance of rooted stories. I continue to evolve while holding onto the essence of North Karnataka's folk culture.
